Government Funding for SME Broadband Extended

February 10, 2015

With funding for SME superfast broadband extended to four more Scottish cities, read on for the details, potential business benefits and find out how to apply.

Yesterday (Mon 9 February), Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the treasury, announced that the UK Government’s SuperConnected Cities scheme will be extended to cover Glasgow, Inverness, Stirling and Dundee, providing funding towards superfast broadband to eligible SME businesses across these cities.

Speaking in Glasgow at the Core Cities conference, Mr Alexander confirmed that these four Scottish cities will now be able to apply for a share of the £40 million of UK government funding to connect them to faster, better quality broadband.

SMEs, sole traders, social enterprises and charities will be able to apply for grants of up to £3000 to cover the costs of installing superfast broadband, to improve business connectivity and communication with a direct impact on the bottom line.

Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Perth are already covered by the scheme that will see superfast services available to 95% of premises by 2017.

Getting SuperConnected – the Impact

One Abica customer to already benefit from the use of superfast broadband is Compello Staffing Group.

The international business and recruitment outsourcing service provider required to move its email service to a cloud based system and install a company-wide recruitment management system at its head office in Glasgow, serving all UK and international sites. The Compello team also wanted to install a Global VoIP telephony system to consolidate multiple phone systems into one.

Abica delivered a solution using superfast broadband services to provide dedicated connectivity across all sites keeping all Internet and data traffic on a private circuit and providing super fast access to company data and the Internet.

Compello benefited from reduced costs for hardware and management cost, as well as increased productivity resulting from faster access to data.

How Can I Apply?

Funding is still available across existing cities and will be available to eligible businesses across the new cities from 1 April 2015.  As an official supplier to the SuperConnected Cities scheme, Abica can help SME businesses in any of these cities to determine eligibility, and access the right superfast broadband package for their business needs.
