iPhone 5 – What to expect.

According to a typically cryptic invitation sent out to the media on Tuesday, Apple will host an iPhone event at its headquarters in San Francisco next week.

The event is expected to be Tim Cook’s first outing as chief executive since he took over from Steve Jobs on 25 August.

The unveiling is also expected by many to include a simpler version of last year’s iPhone 4 – which has become the best-selling smartphone in the world since its launch in June 2010 – which will allow Apple to attack China’s huge market.

A New Design

At first, many people thought that Apple was going to keep the design of the iPhone 5 identical or extremely close to the iPhone 4. However, numerous pictures of new iPhone cases have been released, which in no way could hold the previous versions of the iPhone. Therefore, it is safe to say the iPhone 5 has been redesigned.

Faster Performance

To keep up with competitors, Apple most likely will be upgrading the RAM on the iPhone 5. We rely on smartphones extensively so it only makes sense that Apple would have upgraded the speed and performance of the new iPhone.

Better Camera

While Apple did improve the camera with the iPhone 4, it is expected that the camera on the iPhone 5 will be upgraded further. Many experts believe the screen will be larger, the camera will be 8 megapixels instead of 5, and the iPhone 5 will allow for full 1080p recording.

4G?

It is still unknown whether or not Apple will include 4G capabilities on the iPhone 5. However, if 4G is included, expect the iPhone to be larger. 4G requires a large amount of battery power and Apple has always been careful about battery life. While many people do want 4G on the iPhone, we will have to wait until the meeting to see whether or not Apple has included it.

Addition of New Carriers

Apple has slowly been extending its’ reach to new carriers. There is some speculation that Apple will include new carriers for the iPhone 5. Some rumors have indicated T-Mobile will be included, especially with AT&T trying to buy them. Sprint will likely be offering the iPhone 5 with an unlimited data plan, which AT&T / Verizon no longer offer.

iOS 5

Apple will definitely be launching the iPhone 5 with it’s new operating system giving us over 200 new features. You can see exactly what’s included on the Official Apple iOS5 page.

Voice Recognition

Apple acquired a voiced-based personal assistant service Siri last year and has not used it much at all, at least that we know of. Apple may be integrating this service on the new iPhone to allow for voice recognition.

If anything is certain, the new iPhone 5 should be much improved and better than previous models. Apple seem to improve with each version and hopefully the iPhone 5 is no different.

Technologies shaping our future

Great Scott! Hover-boards and self-lacing sneakers! What next?!

We look at 5 prevalent technologies that are changing the way we run our lives.

Smartphones < 3G and 4G < Cloud Computing < Social Networking < Augmented Reality.

Roads? Roads? Where we’re going we won’t need roads!

Smartphones

Acting like a mobile mini computer device, Smartphones have completely revolutionised how we communicate with each other, as well as how frequently.  With their inbuilt applications they also allow us  to use them for a multitude of functions within the one device: for example, cameras, GPS, Social Media, Games…

The future:

  • Personal Mobile Computes (PMCs) will evolve.
  • PMCs will hold super- computing speeds
  • Users will benefit from a very powerful sense of surroundings
  • PMC will move to wrist watch becoming the interface with which you communicated with any other computer or device.
  • Your PMC will be able to interact with the digital and physical worlds but also providing cues to your subconscious, i.e. what feels good will emit a decision through your PMC.

3G and 4G Wireless Broadband: “How many bars do I have?”

We rely on signal strength to support our new online habits and communicating function. Wireless broadband supports our access to the Cloud and our communication channels. As well as the ‘traditional’ phone calls that necessitate a good signal.

We’re frequently checking smartphone signal strength when wirelessly browsing the Internet and retrieving our email. Today’s 3G and 4G networks provide acceptable but intermittent connections and okay speed. This will change.

The Future:

Deployment will be faster and more organic.

Wireless providers will likely credit homeowners’ monthly bills for having devices like a mini cellular tower extending your wireless network in your home or small business for improved cellular performance at home. With enough of these devices in place, even remote neighbourhoods and towns will enjoy solid wireless access to the cloud.

Personal mobile computers (PMCs) won’t even have signal strength indicators; wireless access to the cloud will be pervasive and ultra-fast at all times.

Cloud Computing

There is certainly a lot of hype around cloud computing: whether it is a safe storage place for our personal and professional data has been up for debate. Businesses all over are moving to the Cloud and individuals are too. The Cloud allows us to access everything remotely and easily.

The Future:

With tomorrow’s cloud computing, all of our personal information and the applications will be available to us at any time. Whether you’re editing a text document while travelling, or adjusting a sales proposal at a client’s office, you’ll never be without the information needed to complete a task.

Augmented Reality

Wow. We remember watching Minority Report , the movie that conceptualized the Augmented Reality concept which was the first to show us how it can be used and how it can transform the way we interact with objects in real world. The seed has now grown into a tree and the technology is now in your smartphone.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with (or augmented by) virtual computer-generated imaginary – creating a mixed reality. (Wikipedia)

The Future:

AR glasses will project images onto the lenses using components that are barely noticeable. Your PMC will display information on your glasses much like a heads-up display (HUD), for instance, with symbols projected along the periphery. Look at a symbol and say something, and your PMC will act on the broadcasted message. Your PMC will also do a great job of minimizing the information displayed, limiting it to just what you need to know now

Some more of what to expect:

  • A conference room with augmented documents
  • Book’s Index pages that give you a glimpse of what’s in for the reader
  • Food items that can tell you how much calories are present in them
  • Roads instructing you to your destination
  • Walls acting like your computer monitors.

 Social Networking

Social Networking has completely revolutionised how we interact with each other and how we share information.

Said also to be in its infancy, and our approach somewhat naive, Social networking is fast becoming the dominant channel for communicating and sharing. Opening ourselves up to others we may not have previously done so with.

The future:

The management of our network will be dynamic and automated; the system will make and break connections to ensure maximum value. As updates are posted, for example, only those relevant to you at the present moment will make it through the filter to your PMC.

Social networking may also become more integrated with other components of our digital lives, like our calendars, address books and GPS. When going to a scheduled meeting with someone, you may be presented with recent and relevant posts that person made on Facebook to help prepare for small talk.

Are you a Smartphone addict?

Getting high on information and communication! The need to be connected.

Very recently, OfCom produced survey results on the usage of Smartphones.

Inextricably linked to social media, information sharing, instant messaging and a fear of missing out (FOMO), it is widely acknowledged that Smartphones are taking over people’s lives. We look at how extensive Smartphone usage can have a negative impact on your life.

Professional

The Smartphone has become a valuable tool in the work place for those who are on the move and like to keep in touch. With the amount of useful apps available now businesses can run even more smoothly. However, when an individual is not at work, the pressure to respond to emails or phone calls is immense, as people are motivated to keep on top of information and are also aware of the negative impression that can result from not responding to an email or call.

Do you answer a call in a meeting? Is this acceptable? Do you respect someone more if they chose NOT to answer a call when you are in the middle of a story or a meeting? Do you benefit from a holiday when you have your Smartphone with you? Is a holiday a holiday with your Smartphone? Is it time you took a Smartphone holiday?

Personal

From a Lifestyle point of you, heavy reliance on your Smartphone can have a negative impact. The use of Smartphones in social and domestic occasions often raises concerns.

How do we use our brains now? How many times have you wanted to know answer to something and simply checked your Smartphone? How much of our brain do we not use anymore?

How many times are you out with friends and you look around to see everyone on their iPhones? – texting, on a social media site or simply chatting to someone? How has this become acceptable? Why is the moment not enough? Why is the grass always greener, is FOMO Syndrome taking over? Is this resonant throughout our society? Have we forgotten how to enjoy the moment without telling everyone about it?

Communication channels

The emergence of multiple communication channels has necessitated a need for people to be constantly ‘available’. The Smartphone has further increased this. Why do we have to be constantly available? What happened to the leaving a message and returning it when you were finished what you were doing?  News can come in at very inappropriate times, unnecessarily and your Smartphone somehow controls this.

As a nation that thrives on instant gratification and a dependency on access to people, knowledge and a constant flow of communication, is it not time that we realised the need for some TTO? (Technology Time Out) and get our endorphin fix from a healthier source? Why not pull off the information ‘high’ way and take the country roads for a change – take a map with you.

Next Generation Access: The Future of Broadband – Don’t get left behind

What is Next Generation Access?

Rising traffic, high levels of information and further demands for network communications have demanded even quicker broadband speeds in order to cope.

More and more businesses are using Cloud Services to communicate as they recognise the resulting benefits and costs efficiencies. Next Generation Access, the future of broadband will allow for even further unified communications, virtualisation and streamlined day-to-day operations. Don’t get left behind.

Next-generation access (NGA) is a term describing a significant upgrade to the existing telecommunication access network by replacing some or all of the copper cable with optical fibre. Since fibre is capable of sustaining higher data transmission rates over longer distances than twisted-pair or coaxial cable, NGA is an important enabler for faster broadband Internet access. Traditional broadband services currently allow up to 24Mbps download speeds for most businesses and homes across the UK.

1. Fibre to the Cabinet

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) uses fibre optic cables to replace all the metal local loops. Fibre is on a rollout plan across the UK and is already being used in places such as Cornwall, Wales and other areas. FTTC changes all the rules. It provides the speed and reliability that have traditionally only been available with leased lines and private networks at a fraction of the cost. More importantly it enables businesses to think realistically about adopting better, more flexible and scalable communications options like Hosted telephony and VoIP that deliver huge cost and business benefits to large corporate companies already, but are not available to small and medium sized business.

2. Ethernet

As well as copper and fibre, Ethernet services have allowed many businesses a more affordable option for faster broadband. This is thanks to companies such as us investing in new infrastructure. Ethernet offers speeds of up to 10Mbps, sometimes 20Mbps

What is the future of broadband?

Let’s face it, if you are in business, you rely on an internet provider for most levels of your productivity as well as continuity. This reliance will be even further deepened as companies realise the benefits of the Cloud, i.e. the concept of a hosted business model. This allows for 3 essential things:

1. Unified communications

2. Virtualisation

3. Streamlined day-to-day operations.

How will it affect your business?

For many individuals even, the Power of the Cloud has been driven by a growing need to keep in touch with the virtual online world constantly which has also driven a change in consumer behaviour. Companies must move with the times and keep up.

Technology moves fast and we have to move with it. We all need to accept that the NEXT generation is the NOW generation or our businesses could be left behind.
