Abica recruits through recession to strengthen management team

April 17, 2009

Abica, the straight talking telecoms network for SMEs, is recruiting some of the most talented individuals in the market, while competitors let people go or move their services offshore.

Abica’s latest recruitment sees the firm add significant experience to its management team with the appointment of new operations manager Christine Byrne.

Christine will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the customer services team, ensuring that clients are being properly looked after and working to improve services wherever possible.

Currently overseeing a team of three, Scott Allison, managing director at abica, said he expected that to double over the coming year.

“Recruiting someone with Christine’s experience and expertise is great news for abica and she will have an important role to play in the development of this business over the coming months and years.”

In a career that has spanned over 20 years, Christine has worked for BT, where she managed a call centre of 250 people and fulfilled consultation contracts for T-Mobile. She was latterly employed by telecom firm Primus.

Christine said she first came across abica when one of her colleagues at Primus left to join the firm. “Primus was looking to move some of its operations overseas and when an opportunity arose with abica I jumped at it. I am very excited about being part of abica’s development and in the short time that I’ve been here I’ve been really impressed by the enthusiasm and positive atmosphere that exists within the business. There is a very clear vision of where abica is going and things certainly happen a lot quicker than at some of the larger organisations where I’ve previously been employed.”

Scott said abica had spent a lot of time in recruiting the best possible people and was happy to take advantage of the downsizing and restructuring at other firms in the telecom sector. He said abica had now almost completed its search for a senior management team.

“Below the executive board, we have excellent people heading up the product and development team, the finance team and now the operations team. I am hoping to complete the process in the coming weeks and am close to appointing another talented individual to head of the sales team.”

Based in Glasgow and launched last year, abica was born out of ABC, an established telecoms business with a profitable turnover of £1.1m. The firm currently employs 12 staff, but expects that to increase significantly in the next 12 months.
