Next Generation Access: The Future of Broadband – Don’t get left behind

What is Next Generation Access?

Rising traffic, high levels of information and further demands for network communications have demanded even quicker broadband speeds in order to cope.

More and more businesses are using Cloud Services to communicate as they recognise the resulting benefits and costs efficiencies. Next Generation Access, the future of broadband will allow for even further unified communications, virtualisation and streamlined day-to-day operations. Don’t get left behind.

Next-generation access (NGA) is a term describing a significant upgrade to the existing telecommunication access network by replacing some or all of the copper cable with optical fibre. Since fibre is capable of sustaining higher data transmission rates over longer distances than twisted-pair or coaxial cable, NGA is an important enabler for faster broadband Internet access. Traditional broadband services currently allow up to 24Mbps download speeds for most businesses and homes across the UK.

1. Fibre to the Cabinet

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) uses fibre optic cables to replace all the metal local loops. Fibre is on a rollout plan across the UK and is already being used in places such as Cornwall, Wales and other areas. FTTC changes all the rules. It provides the speed and reliability that have traditionally only been available with leased lines and private networks at a fraction of the cost. More importantly it enables businesses to think realistically about adopting better, more flexible and scalable communications options like Hosted telephony and VoIP that deliver huge cost and business benefits to large corporate companies already, but are not available to small and medium sized business.

2. Ethernet

As well as copper and fibre, Ethernet services have allowed many businesses a more affordable option for faster broadband. This is thanks to companies such as us investing in new infrastructure. Ethernet offers speeds of up to 10Mbps, sometimes 20Mbps

What is the future of broadband?

Let’s face it, if you are in business, you rely on an internet provider for most levels of your productivity as well as continuity. This reliance will be even further deepened as companies realise the benefits of the Cloud, i.e. the concept of a hosted business model. This allows for 3 essential things:

1. Unified communications

2. Virtualisation

3. Streamlined day-to-day operations.

How will it affect your business?

For many individuals even, the Power of the Cloud has been driven by a growing need to keep in touch with the virtual online world constantly which has also driven a change in consumer behaviour. Companies must move with the times and keep up.

Technology moves fast and we have to move with it. We all need to accept that the NEXT generation is the NOW generation or our businesses could be left behind.
